Siempre escuchamos hablar de la toxoplasmosis, probablemente la enfermedad felina más conocida, aunque no siempre la más frecuente. ¿De qué se trata? Pues es una enfermedad parasitaria que afecta a casi todas las especies de sangre caliente, lo que también incluye a los humanos.
Sin embargo, solo los gatos y otros felinos son los únicos huéspedes definitivos del Toxoplasma gondi. El gato se infecta al ingerir parásitos enquistados presentes en los tejidos de los huéspedes intermediarios (carne mal cocida, roedores, aves).
No resulta fácil diagnosticar la enfermedad. Un análisis de materia fecal no resulta específico, la técnica es dificultosa y considerando que sólo eliminan el parásito durante 2 semanas en toda su vida, sin presentar síntomas clínicos, es casi imposible de detectar. Una determinación de anticuerpos en sangre podría resultar más beneficiosa.
En cuanto al prevención, todo tiene que ver con la alimentación de su mascota. Hay que cocinar bien la carne, evitar manipular la carne cruda, de hacerlo, lavarse bien las manos. Evitar que los gatos cacen y se coman los productos de su cacería. Lavar bien todo lo que entre en contacto con las vías alimenticias del animal.
